Introduction and Welcome

Welcome to Reinvention after 40.  Thank you for joining this discussion group.  Please take time to introduce yourself and tell us what area of reinvention you are focusing on.

This group was started as a result of my frustration with the many women's magazines on the market.  I will be 46 next week (I know, a lady is never supposed to tell her age) and have been doing some self reflection and asking myself if I am too old to reinvent myself.  On my 40th birthday, I lost a job I had held for 14 years and then found out I had heart disease.  On my 41st birthday, I got a job that would change my life.  This job entailed working at a preschool serving children with special needs, some of them severly disabled.  I had found my calling.  My husband says this is my purpose and I have a gift with these children.  Now I have my Masters degree in Special Education.  I am also starting my own business.  But I still feel like something is missing, thus the reason for self reflection.  I believe there is something more I should be doing but not sure what it is.  In this process, I have turned to various books and magazines.  However, I have not found many that fit my needs.  Several magazines deal with 20 and 30 something's who are single and still going to parties.  Other magazines deal with people who are retired and have time to travel.  Where do people our age and at our stage in life fit in?  Some of us may be empty nesters, some may still have children at home, some may be single, divorced, or married.  Some of us may be taking care of our parents.  Most of us have outgrown the party scene.  Whatever our situation, we are coming "into our own".

So in my frustration, I have created this discussion and would enjoying hearing from you.  I have also decided not to worry about turning to magazines and books to find myself but to look at my successes and my passions.

Mary Beth thank you for starting this discussion group, as the creator of The Reinvention Experts Site, I can relate to Reinvention 100%. I turned the big 40 last January but my first big reinvention came about five years ago after I got downsized and became a became a professional speaker and coach. I remember being so depressed when I got downsized, I was really depressed and lost all of my joy. In addition, the guy I was dating at the time was not supportive so we called it quits and we were close to marriage..uugh. In less than a year after being downsized I began traveling all over the country motivating audiences...who knew?  I continue to have a lot of highs and some lows but I'm inspired to continue the Reinvention process because it seems to get better. I will share a really private change I recently experienced, on Thanksgiving eve in 2009 I met a man that would change my life, we were actually engaged for a very short time. Long story short, he was a guy that presented himself as a prince and turned out to be a frog and I can say after experiencing an emotional roller coaster for a year, this past Thanksgiving eve felt amazing, because I realize I healed and although my experience was very painful, I still believe that it's better to have loved and lost...to have never loved at all. I hope my story inspires all of you...
